The short answer

Bergen is one of the easiest Norway ports: from Skolten you can walk to Bryggen. Bring rain gear: Bergen is one of Europe's rainiest cities. The Fløibanen funicular is the top activity; lines get long, so go early.

Where Bergen lies

Where your ship docks

Main cruise terminal is at Skolten, near Bryggen, recently upgraded with elevators and escalators. Some ships use Jekteviken, farther out; most passengers there now walk a pedestrian route into town. Bergen allows at most 4 cruise calls and 8,000 passengers a day.

Shuttle. Not usually needed from Skolten. From Jekteviken, check your ship's daily planner.

Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Rain is very common, bring a waterproof jacket and shoes.
  • Funicular lines when several ships are in.

Do this

  • The Bergen Card covers public transport (including the light rail) and many museums.
  • Tourist information is at Strandkaien 3; luggage storage is available there.
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • Daily cap: 4 cruise calls and 8,000 passengers.
  • Ships must use shore power; the port aims for all cruise ships on shore power by 2026.
  • Norway has no cruise passenger tax in 2026. A national fee of NOK 100 per passenger per 24 hours in port is proposed from January 1, 2027, if approved (reported by The Local Norway, March 2026). Norway's separate local tourist tax of up to 3% applies to hotel stays, not cruise passengers.

Accessibility

Skolten terminal has elevators and escalators. The harbor is flat. Bryggen has uneven wooden alleys.

Money

Norwegian krone (NOK). Cards (tap-to-pay) are accepted almost everywhere, even for small amounts. You rarely need cash. Tell your bank you are traveling.
