Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • World Heritage fjords (Geirangerfjord, Sunnylvsfjord, Tafjord, Nærøyfjord, Aurlandsfjord): from 1 January 2026, passenger ships UNDER 10,000 gross tons must run with zero emissions there. Big cruise ships (10,000 gross tons and up) must comply from 1 January 2032. So in 2026-2031, large cruise ships still sail in. Source: Norwegian Maritime Authority.
  • Ships must use shore power where it is available.
  • Norway has no cruise passenger tax in 2026. A national fee of NOK 100 per passenger per 24 hours in port is proposed from January 1, 2027, if approved (reported by The Local Norway, March 2026). Norway's separate local tourist tax of up to 3% applies to hotel stays, not cruise passengers.

Accessibility

The village is flat near the pier. The railway has some accessible seating; ask the Flåm customer center (+47 57 63 14 00) before booking.

Money

Norwegian krone (NOK). Cards (tap-to-pay) are accepted almost everywhere, even for small amounts. You rarely need cash. Tell your bank you are traveling.
