Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Heat on the Acropolis rock; no shade and slippery marble.
  • Crowds from 10:00 onward.
  • Metro and taxi strikes happen with little notice.
  • Walking between the terminal and metro takes up to 30 minutes.
  • The Acropolis elevator was out of order per a notice dated 3 Nov 2026; call ahead.

Do this

  • Only buy Acropolis tickets on hh.gr (official) to avoid resale markups.
  • Wear shoes with grip; the marble is polished smooth.
  • Use a contactless card at the metro gate; fares cap at €4.10 a day.
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • Greek cruise passenger fee (per person, per port, from 21 July 2025): Santorini and Mykonos €20 (1 Jun–30 Sep), €12 (Apr–May and Oct), €4 (Nov–Mar). All other Greek ports: €5 / €3 / €1 for the same seasons. Most lines add it to your onboard bill. MSC says it charges only guests who go ashore; other lines may charge everyone.
  • Acropolis €30. One entry only; you cannot re-enter (Ministry of Culture site).
  • Sites can close at short notice (weather, strikes). Check hh.gr announcements the morning you arrive.
  • Greek state sites: 'reduced' prices are mainly for EU citizens. Most Americans pay full price. Free entry on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month from 1 Nov to 31 Mar, and on a few set dates.

Accessibility

There is an elevator on the north side for wheelchair users (call +30 213 131 7762 ahead). It does not run in strong wind, and an urgent notice on 3 Nov 2026 said it was out of order. Disabled visitors must use the main entrance. The South Slope is wheelchair accessible with help. Athens metro stations generally have lifts (unverified per station).

Money

Euro (€). Cards are widely accepted. Carry some small euro cash for buses, small boats, water and tips.
