Trieste is an easy port: you dock in the city center and can walk to Piazza Unità d'Italia in minutes. The top trip is Miramare Castle, 8 km up the coast by city bus 6 or 36. Venice is about 2 hours each way, too far to do well on a port day.
Where Trieste lies
Where your ship docks
Ships dock at the Stazione Marittima (Trieste Terminal Passeggeri), Molo dei Bersaglieri 3, in Warehouses 41-42, with two cruise berths. It is on the city waterfront, next to Piazza Unità d'Italia.
Shuttle. Not needed; the terminal is in the center.

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it
Beware
- Bookings may say 'Trieste (Venice)'; Venice is about 150 km away, roughly 2 hours by road (Holland America).
- The bora wind can be very strong and cold, especially in winter.
- The climb to San Giusto is steep.
- Italy has frequent announced transport strikes (trains, buses, ferries), often on Fridays. Check the Italian Ministry of Transport strike list (scioperi.mit.gov.it) the week before your port day.
Do this
- Tap your contactless card on the bus validator; no need to find a ticket shop.
- First Sunday of the month: Miramare castle entry is free (more crowded).
- Skip a DIY Venice trip on a short call; the round trip uses about 4 hours.
Fees, money and access
Rules & fees
- No visitor caps or cruise fees found for Trieste.
Accessibility
Good near the port: the terminal, waterfront and Piazza Unità are flat. San Giusto hill is steep. Miramare castle park has slopes and gravel paths.
Money
Euro (EUR). Visa and Mastercard work in most shops, restaurants and museums; tap-to-pay is common. Carry 20-40 euros in cash for small cafes, toilets, markets and some buses. Use a bank ATM (inside or at a bank) and always choose to be charged in euros, not dollars, when a card machine or ATM asks.
