Rome's cruise port is not in Rome. It is in the town of Civitavecchia, about 70 km (43 mi) from Rome's Fiumicino airport. You can take a taxi or cruise transfer (about 90 minutes), or take the train and then a short port shuttle.

Where Rome lies
From Rome Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) Airport (FCO)
About 70 km (43 mi) to the port (Holland America)
Taxi or private car
- Collect your bags and go to the official taxi line, or meet your pre-booked driver.
- Ask for the Port of Civitavecchia and give your ship's name.
- The driver takes you through the vehicle gate (Varco Vespucci).
Holland America says Uber Black is readily available. Pre-book a private car for a fixed price.
Train (cheapest)
- At Fiumicino, take a regional train toward Rome and get off at Roma Trastevere.
- At Trastevere, change to a regional train to Civitavecchia.
- At Civitavecchia station, take the CSP cruise shuttle bus (€6) to the ship, or walk about 600 m to the Varco Fortezza pedestrian gate.
- Inside the port, free Port Mobility shuttles take you to the cruise docks.
Two trains plus a shuttle. Hard with heavy bags. Trains from Rome to Civitavecchia run about every 30 minutes.
Cruise line transfer
- Book through your cruise line before you fly.
- Find the line's rep in arrivals.
- Ride straight to the ship.
Low-stress choice for a same-day arrival.
From Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA)
Farther from Civitavecchia than Fiumicino (exact distance not verified)
Bus + trains
- Take the ATRAL shuttle bus to the train station.
- Take a train to Roma Termini.
- Take a regional or Intercity train to Civitavecchia.
- Use the CSP shuttle or walk to the port gate.

Terminals & docks
The main cruise terminal is Roma Cruise Terminal (RCT), with several docks. Free Port Mobility shuttles run inside the port every 15-20 minutes, about 05:30 to 23:00. Largo della Pace is the port's main shuttle hub and information point (open 06:30-19:30). The port does not publish which line uses which dock; it changes by ship.
Check-in
- There is no luggage storage at the pier. Storage exists at Civitavecchia train station and near Varco Fortezza (Holland America).
- The CSP station-to-ship shuttle only runs on ship days, roughly 7:00 to 19:00. Pay €6 on board.
What trips people up
- Civitavecchia is about 80 km from central Rome. Many first-timers think the ship leaves from Rome itself.
- Taxis from the ship back to the airport can have waits of over 3 hours (Holland America). Book a car or transfer for the end of your cruise.
- Train plus shuttle is cheap but tiring with heavy bags.
Do this
- Stay at least 1-2 nights in Rome before the cruise.
- Get off the train at Roma San Pietro for St. Peter's, or Ostiense for the Colosseum.
- Pre-book a car for sailing day if you have lots of luggage.
Leaving the ship: back to the airport
The same routes run in reverse. On the last morning everyone leaves at once, so lines for taxis and buses are at their longest. Book flights home for the afternoon or later, and arrange your ride in advance if you can.
