The short answer

This is a tender port: allow extra time for the boat ride back, and lines can be long late in the day. Villefranche itself is pretty and walkable (Citadel, Cocteau's chapel). Nice and Monaco are reached by local train or Lignes d'Azur bus; fares could not be confirmed.

Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Tender service can be suspended in rough seas.
  • France has periodic national strikes that can cut train (SNCF/TER) and bus service. Check the news and the transit operator's site a few days before.
  • Trains and buses packed in summer.
  • Steep paths from the harbor to the station.

Do this

  • Take an early tender; afternoon return lines are longest.

  • None verified.

Accessibility

Tenders are hard for wheelchair users and may not be possible in swell. Villefranche harbor area is flat; the station and old lanes are uphill with steps.

Money

Euro (EUR). Visa and Mastercard work in most shops, restaurants and museums; tap-to-pay is common. Carry 20-40 euros in cash for small cafes, toilets, markets and some buses. Use a bank ATM (inside a bank) and always choose to be charged in euros, not dollars, when a card machine or ATM asks.
