The short answer

Rome is a long way from the ship, so this is a long, tiring day. The cheapest and most reliable way in is the train: trains run about every 30 minutes and a BIRG ticket costs 12 euros return and includes Rome buses and metro. Pick two or three sights, not ten.

Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Distance: 2-3 hours of travel round trip. A late or cancelled train can strand you.
  • Italy has frequent announced transport strikes (trains, local buses, ferries), often on Fridays. A national general strike was called for Oct 30, 2026 and then postponed (EAV notice), and the Uffizi listed a strike day on Oct 30, 2026. Check the Italian Ministry of Transport strike list (scioperi.mit.gov.it) the week before your port day.
  • Heat: Rome is very hot June-September. Carry water; there are free drinking fountains.
  • Crowds and long security lines at the Vatican and Colosseum, especially Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Pickpockets on Metro line A, bus 64 and around Termini.
  • Cobblestones and lots of walking: 15,000+ steps is normal.
  • Vatican Museums closed most Sundays.

Do this

  • Save the Trenitalia app on your phone and check the return train before leaving the ship.
  • Pick either Vatican OR ancient Rome as your main focus.
  • Carry the ship's port agent phone number from your daily planner.
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • Vatican: buy only on tickets.museivaticani.va; other sites may charge much more.
  • Vatican and churches: shoulders and knees covered.
  • Paper train tickets must be stamped before boarding or you can be fined.
  • Sitting on the Spanish Steps and eating at major monuments may be restricted (unverified, check signs).

Accessibility

The port shuttle helps with the long walk inside the port. Regional trains may have steps; ask staff for help. The Vatican Museums give free tickets to disabled visitors and one companion, issued at the Special Permits/Welcome Desk on arrival (not online). Rome's old center has cobbles and few curb cuts. A cruise line wheelchair-accessible tour is often the easier choice.

Money

Euro (EUR). Visa and Mastercard work in most shops, restaurants and museums; tap-to-pay is common. Carry 20-40 euros in cash for small cafes, toilets, markets and some buses. Use a bank ATM (inside a bank) and always choose to be charged in euros, not dollars, when a card machine or ATM asks.
